INTO THE WILD.

The Rhino, love to see them,  most probably he will not be here in two years time.  What a terrible shame,  I like to believe that the murdering bastards that murder them will get what they deserve one day, the cruelty of it is terrible, cut the horn off while the victim, is still alive, in great pain I am sure,  a lot is being done by the game parks and the kind people who donate their time.  They have people up on the hills looking for poachers.
But the poachers earn so much money that I am sure they are willing to take the risk of being shot, sometimes the protectors get shot as well, so it is one big dirty mess.

If you are interested here is a link.

We went away for a visit to a Game Park,  Madekue and stayed at the Bush House,  they treated us like Royalty, and we saw some lovely game.   Came home with wonderful memories.

This 6-day-old pygmy hippo calf is living the good life with his handlers at the Cango Wildlife Ranch in South Africa. According to The Daily Mail, the calf was rejected by his mother, Hilda, after being born last Thursday and now receives round-the-clock care from staff.
Harry is breaking hearts and living like royalty in a special suite, which is no surprise considering his namesake.
Harry gives his full-time handler Toni Inggs a loving lick! The pygmy hippo won't grow to be more than 3 feet tall.
“We knew we wanted to call him something beginning with H and it suddenly struck us to name him Harry after the prince,” Rob Hall, the reserve’s manager, told The Daily Mail. “Our team here loves Prince Harry as he shows true grit and is passionate about Africa. Our little guy is already proving he's made of similar stuff and is determined to make the most of life.”
Splish, splash, Harry's taking a bath! Pygmy hippos spend the majority of their lives underwater. As nocturnal animals, they only emerge at night to eat.
The calf’s birth was a cause for celebration at the center since pygmy hippos are a critically endangered species, with fewer than 3,000 left in the wild.
Hungry hippo! Harry is fed a bottle of milk every three hours by his watchful handlers.
Harry was the eighth calf born to his mother but only the third to survive. When Hilda showed no maternal instincts toward the newborn, handlers stepped in

Sunday Times  South Africa  November  11 2012

Hilda, the 24 year old pygmy hippo wo lost her first-born, Prince Harry last year - Is believed to be pregnant again.
When Harry died on an operating table at the Cango Wildlife Ranch in Oudtshoorn in May, the world mourned the passid of the pint sized celebrity.
But now staff at the animal sancturary hope that Hilda and her long-term partner, Herbert, 23 may soon  be parents again.
They are not quite sure yet - because pygmy hippos, an endangered species originally from swamps in West Africa, are k nowl for phantom pregnancies.
And no exact birth day can be predidted, said santuary spokeswoman Tammy Moult,
because the animals, which have lived in a pool at the ranche for the past 10 years, enjoy an active love life.
"Should Hilda be pregnant, we could expect delivery of the baby any time from now through to January,"
"It is difficult to narrow down the dates as our  curators have multiple records of matings.
Prince Harry became an internet sensation after pictures of him as a 5kg newborn calf captivated heart around the globe.
Britain's Daily Mail in May mourned the tragic death of an internet icon and Fox Nes int the US lamented the passing of the pygmy hippo who shot to worldwide fame with his adorable face and small stature.
Prince Harry was seven weeks old when he suffered heart failure during an operation to repair an umbilical hernia.  He had needed round-th-clock care after being rejected at birth by his mother.

Western Cape MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde who when to Oudtshoorn to meet Harry before his death, name him an ambassar for for tourism in the province

RHINO DIES.

A demonstration to show new anti-poaching techniques developed by an animal reserve in South Africa took a disastrous turn when the rhino used in the procedure accidently died.

The Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve in Pretoria, South Africa invited journalists and animal activists to watch the process where veterinarians inject the horn of a rhinoceros with a neon pink dye and an insecticide as well as a tracking device in order to stop poachers from killing the endangered animals.

The dye is similar to the one used by banks to mark money during robberies. The idea is to help law enforcement to identify rhino horns that may be sold on the black market. The insecticide is used to protect the animals against ticks.

Twenty rhinos have already undergone the procedure at the animal reserve without any problems.

Lorinda Hern, spokesperson for the reserve said the technique was developed to stop poachers from killing the endangered animals and taking their horns. Last year, a record 448 rhinos were poached in South Africa, so their horns could be used in traditional Chinese medicine.

The horns have become popular among middle-class Asians who believe they possess medical benefits.

Tests are underway to determine why the male rhino in his twenties died, but veterinarians think there were complications from either the sedative or the drug used to revive the animal.

Ms. Hern said, “It’s sad for us; it’s the loss of another animal. It’s a death that I still chalk up to poaching.”

Joseph Okori, a wildlife veterinarian and a World Wildlife Fund rhino expert was present for the demonstration. He said, “There is always a potention risk that a sedated animal will die.”

“The whole issue is, we are facing a serious rhino poaching crisis. This is a war. The desperation is quite high for rhino owners, to do whatever it takes to protect their rhinos,” said Okori.

OUR USA HIPPO.

Another Son:  Richy, a week-old hippo washed away from his mother during January's flooding in Limpopo, with his new 'dad' Tony Joubert.  The newborn was adopted by Tony and his wife, Shirley, a week ago after being discovered under a pile of debris on the couple's farm near Hoedspruit.  Richy, who needs 3 litres of milk a day, has been named in honour of US millionaire Richard Baron Cohen, who had donated money for the baby's upkeep.  Baron Cohen is also godfather to the Jouberts' other hippo 'daughter' , Jessica.

I snagged this from the Sunday Times and the picture was taken by Simphiwe Nkwali.

I wised he had washed up in our garden,  I love hippos so much, even though they kill more people in Africa than any other animal.   Unbelievable is'nt it.
